    the Samanids began as governors under the Abbasids and later rose to be a major independent dynasty ruling from their capital at Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan in the 9th-11th centuries. this is a silver dirham, 30 mm in size fromthe reign of Abd al-Malik 1 (AH 343-350/954-961 AD). it was struck at Samarqand (in Uzbekistan) in AH 345. The Samanid empire was on the Siik Road, a major trade route between east and west, and Samanid coins were major trade coins along the route.Hoards of Samanid dirhams have been found as far as Scandinavia. this coin grades a crude VF for the issue. it is Album 1462, under which he notes that these are "usually abysmally struck, the worst of the Samanid dirhams.
